Directorate of Diagnostic Services
The Directorate was created in 2012 with the following departments under it: Laboratory, Radiography, Physiotherapy, Dental Therapy, Dental Technology, and Maintenance departments. The directorate is concern with diagnosis of disease to enhance quality treatment of patients and disease prevention in communities.
From the establishment of Hospital Services Management Board (HSMB) in 2021, there was creation of Directorate, Medical Laboratory Service which gave rise to the renaming of Directorate of Diagnostic Services in State Ministry of Health to Directorate of Medical Laboratory Services (DMLS) in 2022. The Directorate has its Vision and Mission driven from the Parent Ministry.
Function
The directorate has the following functions:
- Been a member of the Ministerial Tender Board and policy formulation
- Attends to all issues affecting staff such as promotions and discipline
- Collaborate with the Directorate of Public Health in the areas of disease surveillance and the Public Health Laboratory.
- Liaise with DPRS for the procurement, distribution, installation, and repairs of equipment
- Supervise the training of technicians.
- Facilitate training on QMS for scientists/technician
- Liaise with the training unit of the Ministry in respect to in-service training.
- Facilitate accreditation of facilities for internship training and supervise the training.
- Encourage/ensure operational research.
- Ensure continuous professional development for all staff.
- Monitor and inspect units of the Directorate at all levels.
- Conducts integrated supportive supervision in state hospitals, primary healthcare facilities, schools of health technology, and private laboratories.

- Upgrade of Secondary Health facilities Laboratories, through Nigeria State Health Investment Project (NSHIP). Increasing the Efficiency, Effectiveness, Quality, and Equity of Health Services in 2019
