Directorate of Nursing Services
The Directorate is one of the eight (8) Directorates in the Ministry of Health, which operates according to the laid down rules and regulations of the state civil service under the Honorable Commissioner of Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru. It is being headed by a substantive Director and two (2) Deputy Directors housed in two office accommodations within the headquarters.
The Organogram of the Directorate consist of:
- Director of Nursing services.
- Deputy Director of Nursing Services Clinical.
- Deputy Director Nursing Services Inspectorate
- Deputy Director Nursing Services Education.
- Assistant Director of Nursing Services Clinical
- Assistant Director of Public Health Nursing Services.
- Assistant Director Nursing Services Inspectorate.
- Assistant Director of Nursing Services Education.
Functions
The department has the following functions:
- Coordinates the establishment and maintenance of the state’s own school of nursing and midwifery. Representative of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.
- Initiator and Custodian of Nursing Polices in the State.
- Member Ministerial Meetings of Directors.
- Chairman Directorate meetings.
- Chairman State Nursing and Midwifery Committee.
- Co-ordinates the functions of the State Nursing and Midwifery Committee.
- Appoint local examiners for the final qualifying examination when necessary.
- Designs a schedule of duties for officers of the Directorate.
- Liaises with other Directorates on issues in the interest of the service.
- Member/Secretary of the Governing Council of the School of Nursing
- The directorate initiate and serve as custodian of Nursing and Midwifery policies in the state
- Liaises with Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, and its responsible for the implementation of its policies and program in the state.
- Responsible for Nursing education at Basic and Post basic levels
- Responsible for organizing continuing education for Nursing and midwifery services program for Nurses.
- Responsible for signing disbursement of loans in Nursing Scheme (co-operatives)
- Responsible for preparing guidelines for improving, maintaining and quality nursing care in hospitals and clinics.
- Supervision of Nursing education and services within the state.
- Serves as secretary at governing council meetings.
Achievement
Within the period under review (2019 to 2023), the Directorate has achieved the following;
- Gained full Directorate status
- Commencement of mandatory Midwifery service scheme in the state which used to be handled by the NPHCDA before now.
- The Directorate was able to host the National Sensitization OSCE work shop for nurses.
- The Nurse Internship program was launched and fully commenced in the Specialist Hospital Gombe.
- The National Launch of the ND/HND Nursing science program was successfully hosted at the College of Nursing and Midwifery Gombe on the 4th February 2019
- Training need assessment has resulted into control and regulation of post basic training directed at critical areas.
- The commencement of Post basic nursing program in the college of Nursing and Midwifery.
- Biannual Mandatory Continuous Professional Development Program has been successfully organized in the period under review.
- The Directorate has maintained a cordial relationship with the various professional groups in the health sector.
- A new Ford brand Hilux van has been allocated to the CON&M
- The Directorate was opportune to conduct the first ever CBT final exams for the College of nursing and midwifery Gombe.
- The directorate also produced the first ever Nurse Permanent secretary in the state.
Member of the interview and examination committee of the post Basic Critical Nursing Care and Perioperative Nursing Care School Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe.
