Directorate of Public Health

The directorate deals matter relating to control of epidemic and endemic diseases, immunization, health education, nutrition and other primary health issues.

FUNCTIONS

  • Policy initiation and guidance to all public health programmes.
  • Coordination of all public health interventions in the state, priority diseasesurveillance and response to outbreaks/epidemics.
  • Co-ordinate all environmental, occupational and school health services in the state.
  • Enforcement of Public Health laws and regulations
  • Responsibility for the staff and activities at the Public Health offices inGeneral/Cottage Hospitals, and the Port Health unit at the Gombe International Airport.
  • Inter-phase with all other MDAs, NGOs, and CSOs and Developmental Partners involved in activities, projects and programmes that promote health and / or preventdiseases.
  • Assessment of Public Health programmes and projects.

ACHIEVEMENT

  1. Excellent performance with the routine surveillance KPIs
  2. Early detection, effective response and efficient control of various outbreaks of epidemic prone diseases and other priority conditions like Lassa fever, CSM, COVID -19, Rabies and cVDPV
  3. Establishment of a Public Health Laboratory at the SSH Gombe
  4. Establishment of isolation and treatment centres at the State Specialist Hospital, Kwadon.
  5. Functional rapid response teams at state and LGA levels
  6. Strategic reserve of commodities for immediate response to outbreaks most of the             time with pre-positioning of laboratory and management kits for selected priority diseases
  7. Efficient Public Health Emergency Operations Centre currently with effective IMS for various outbreaks
  8. A functional Epidemic Preparedness and Response Committee.
  9. High level of collaboration with development partners
